About Artwork by Alba Barranca
Alba Barranca is a Toronto-based abstract artist whose work explores emotion through atmospheric, intuitive painting. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, she creates layered compositions that evolve through movement, experimentation, and instinct, allowing each painting to emerge naturally rather than from a predetermined plan.
A lifelong maker, Barranca has always been drawn to creating as a way of understanding and expressing her experience of the world. Alongside her studio practice, she teaches mathematics. While her passion for math has shaped her analytical way of thinking, painting offers a space to step away from logic, embrace intuition, and respond freely to emotion.
Light has become a recurring element throughout her work, often appearing as a subtle presence that guides the composition and creates a sense of atmosphere. Rather than depicting a specific place or narrative, her paintings remain intentionally open, inviting viewers to bring their own experiences and interpretations to each piece.
Much of her work is inspired by her lifelong experiences with mental health and her curiosity about how our lived experiences shape the way we move through the world. Rather than viewing difficult experiences as something to overcome or erase, she has learned to live alongside them with compassion and understanding. Painting has become a space where she can exist honestly, without feeling the need to simplify or hide parts of herself. As a mental wellness advocate, Alba creates art that invites openness, vulnerability, and reflection, offering a reminder that there is beauty in the complexity of being human.
